When You Can’t Make The Music, Make Some Noise
I was listening to the radio the other day and I heard a quote that said something like, even a broken instrument can still make music.
We’re not always going to be at our best. In fact, probably more often than not, we aren’t at our best.
More often than not, we are not operating at peak performance.
We are tired. We are hungry. We are stressed. We are distracted. The outside world (whether that is home life, business, work, the world in general) has crept in and impacted our performance in some way or another.
When we don’t have the optimal conditions, or when we aren’t at our best, when we aren’t in a flow state, when we aren’t playing the beautiful game, but instead, just out there competing, we may not feel as if we can make the music.
But we can still make some noise.
We can show up. We can let ’em know we are here.
This is something I’ve been working with my son a lot on when we play against each other. When we compete against each other, he’s not doing a lot of winning. I’m not out here trying to be a tough guy and destroy him all of the time, but I’m also not letting him win too often just for the sake of making him feel good.
Naturally, he sometimes gets frustrated.
And then comes the lesson:
You can either compete or you can complain, but you cannot do both.
Similar encouragement here for us.
When things aren’t going our way. When the conditions are less than ideal. When we aren’t at our best. When we’d rather stay home, avoid the conflict, or not deal with the problem, what do we choose?
When it’s not going to be pretty, or feel good, or sound as good as we’d like. When it feels like we can’t make the music, what do we choose?
We can still show up. We can still compete. We can still make a ruckus.
When you can’t make the music, you can still make some noise.
I’m pulling for you,
Bryan
